Bioengineering

There are new and exciting methods of controlling shoreline erosion without using hard armament (rip rap). Bioengineering is the term used to describe shoreline stabilization methods that utilize vegetation to assist in erosion control. These methods of stabilization often involve the use of coconut fiber, poplar fiber, or other biodegradeable material woven into erosion control blankets or mats.

Well known methods include:
~ Vegetated biolog ~ Vegetated soil wraps
~ Vegetated bogmat ~ Live stakes

These methods can all look very landscaped if installed properly and maintained correctly. Besides providing erosion control, the addition of native vegetation to the shoreline area provides excellent habitat for reptiles, amphibians, songbirds, small mammals, and insects. The natural vegetation also preserves the natural lake aesthetic.
