Shoreline Plant Info

Wisconsin is made up of many unique habitats including woodland, prairie, wetland, and savannah. These areas produce wonderful native plants that are specifically adapted to the site conditions where they occur. In the field of shoreline restoration, we try to utilize tree, shrub, and grass/forb species that are native to the state and suited to the site conditions. Generally shorelines in need of restoration or stabilization have been altered by the removal of natural vegetation and the introduction of turf grass. When restoring these areas it is usually necessary to utilize mesic to dry prairie plants in addition to wetland vegetation.

When determining how many plants to use in restoration projects, remember that the size of the nursery plant used is critical. Determine densities based on both individual species as well as plant cup size. Species such as big bluestem, prairie sage, or other aggressive species need not be planted densely. Plants in a 2” cup must be planted closer together than plants in a 5” deep pot. Ultimately the root system size is the determining factor.

We’ve provided a quick list of great shoreland restoration plants below. These species are hardy and, if planted appropriately for the site conditions, usually do well. Remember – these plants, even those 1 to 2 feet from the water line, require regular watering for the first year. That is often the most important factor in the success of the project.
