The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has jurisdiction
over all activities done below the Ordinary High Water Mark
(OHWM). This is important to understand since the DNR often
times requires permits for shoreline stabilization projects
involving placing or removing materials from the shoreline.
Before beginning any stabilization work, visit the DNR website
at www.dnr.state.wi.us to determine if your specific project
requires a permit. In addition, you may need a permit from
your local County Land Conservation Department or County Zoning
Department for your project. Each county in the state has it’s
own zoning regulations. Some counties require permits for such
activities as adding structures within the shoreland area,
removing large amounts of woody vegetation from the shoreland
area, grading on slopes of greater than 10%, etc. Consult your
county to see if any permits are required for your shoreland
area project.
